With an academic background in cultural and visual anthropology, her artistic practice is deeply informed by research, observation and a strong narrative sensibility. Before becoming known in the world of collage, she has built a long and accomplished career in documentary journalism, producing photographic and illustrated reportage that explores culture, identity and contemporary society. Her multidisciplinary experience shapes a visual language that is both conceptually rigorous and poetically expressive. Her creative process is based on abstract collage/assemblage using antique papers: she weaves memory, places and stories into evocative works, often commissioned by hotels, restaurants or private individuals, alongside covers and editorial illustrations, collaborations with design and fashion brands, and abstract collage courses that she holds at Studio73 of which she is co-founder. From word to image: collage as a form of reportage The Roman artist over the years has transformed the principles of narrative journalism — observation, collection of sources, selection, storytelling — into visual art. In her collages the images are never purely decorative: they are fragments of memory and emotional geographies. Her journalistic and anthropological training is very evident in her art: maps, letters, texts and paper materials such as the pages of old books and magazines, become complex visual narratives in her hands; newspaper headlines, typographic texts, gestural calligraphy often recur as materials in her works, evoking the craft of writing. The collage for Marina Misiti is a way to tell stories without words, but with the same precision and intensity of an investigation or a report. For the Orient-Express, La Minerva Hotel in Rome has recently created an entire collection of abstract collages on the idea of physical and inner travel. Over the years, I have been many things: a collage artist in love with abstraction and drawn to anything that carries a past, a patina, a story to tell; an obsessive reader, writer and collector of papers, colours and fabrics; a “reporter with a pencil” (and a camera); an exploring anthropologist with a backpack full of dreams and maps; a pirate hunting for design treasures in flea markets; and, always, a woman with a suitcase, ready to leave for a new adventure. All these experiences have gradually found their way into my artistic practice. My work moves between collage, abstraction, collected materials and the visual traces of places, cultures and memories. Today, I create artistic projects for luxury hotels, private homes, hospitality spaces and collectors, alongside on-demand classes and specialist workshops. In recent years, my colourful collage series has opened a more introspective chapter: an exploration of memory through form and colour, rooted in the emotional and visual landscape of my childhood and adolescence in the 1970s and 1980s. The distinctive shapes, colours and aesthetics of those years have become fragments of a personal visual archive, intertwined with my imagined memories of the 1950s and 1960s. Colour became a personal language through which I revisited and reimagined these inner fragments. After this journey through colour, I return to the quieter language that has always shaped my work—a restrained palette of beige, white and black, and some touch of colors, rooted in my artistic formation in the late 1980s and early 1990s and informed by Minimalism, Japanese aesthetics and abstraction. The two languages are not opposites, but different expressions of the same ongoing exploration of memory, perception and form.
